Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine

Acupuncture is the use of tiny needles, electric or laser stimulation of specific points on the body to correct imbalances in energy flow, blood flow, nerve conduction, endorphins and neurotransmitters to improve organ and body function. Acupuncture is often combined with Chinese herbal formulas to optimize treatment but either can be used by itself.

Therapeutic Nutrition & Detoxification

Food and proper nutrition can be directly linked to improving your health and to reducing your risks of certain medical conditions as you age. We work together to improve your digestive function while recommending certain food choices appropriate for your history, current condition and risk factors. Supplements can be used to complement dietary changes adding benefit when food based nutrition is not enough. Also, many of today’s chronic diseases can be directly linked to either toxic exposures from your work, home or social environments or to poor liver function, (your body’s detoxification system). Detoxification can lower your body’s toxic load and improve organ function helping your body deal with many of the imbalances causing chronic disease.

Botanical Medicine

Plants and herbs have been used in healing for thousands of years and they are the foundations for modern pharmacology. Botanical medicine can augment the body’s natural defenses and innate healing ability. In many cases herbs are very effective without having associated side effects.

Homeopathic Medicine

This powerful system of medicine dates back to the 1700′s. Homeopathic Remedies function on the physical, mental and emotional levels to stimulate and enhance the body’s vital force and function to facilitate healing. Homeopathy uses ultra-dilute doses of a substance so there is little chance of a drug interaction as there may be with some herbal medicines.

Stress Management & Clinical Hypnosis

Modern research has shown the extensive connection between stress and illness. Positively affecting stressful mental and emotional states are vital to the healing process. Hypnosis is not what you might have seen in a stage show or movie, it is a clinical science and can be very helpful in stress reduction, weight loss, smoking cessation and in other applications.

Biopuncture/Prolotherapy

Herbal and homeopathic formulations are used safely and effectively to improve healing, relieve inflammation, treat chronic or acute pain and illness. A sterile homeopathic or herbal formulation is injected either just below the skin, into acupuncture points, into the muscle or around tendons, ligaments and joints to facilitate the desired benefits.

Functional Medicine

Functional Medicine is a relatively new term for what Naturopathic Medicine has been doing for over 100 years. There was a saying:  “Naturopathic Physicians were doing Functional Medicine before it was cool!” The foundation of Functional Medicine is the belief that all the body’s systems work in conjunction with each other and one system affects other system, whether for the positive or the negative. The term Functional Medicine, in practice, includes the terms like Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Integrative Medicine, Foundational Medicine, Restorative Medicine. These are all practices that work to address the “root cause” and restore the body function.

Conventional medicine focuses on “what” is going on: “What are the symptoms?” and “What is the diagnosis”. Functional Medicine focuses on the “Why”. “Why is this happening and why now?”  If you never had digestive problems and one day you wake with digestive problems that don’t go away we need to determine the reason, not just give drugs to stop the symptoms. This medicine is based on the science of how the body’s systems work together and how they affect and are affected by each other. By getting to “root cause”, where the issue is actually starting, we can then work to correct the issues not just manage them. We spend a lot of time talking about your history, goals and how to address them. Then we focus on all aspects of what needs to happen to get the body working properly including: habits, lifestyle, diet and nutrition, stress management, pain management hormonal health, sleep, supplements, etc. Then, following the plan of action we work to improve the function of the body, decreasing or resolving the symptoms and decreasing or eliminating the need for medication and even supplements.
